Tonight, I will be rooting for the San Jose Sharks to put Calgary away. There are a couple reasons for this, not the least of which is that the more Canadian franchises that are eliminated, the better. The one exception is the Montreal Canadiens, but that's because I make money every time they win, and Quebec isn't really part of Canadia anyway.
Most of all though, I want San Jose to win because that would mean Colorado gets the privilege of being the ones to send Detroit to the early tee time that everyone but Wings idiots knows is coming.
The Red Wings are the epitome of a paper tiger. The mediots love to fellate the Wings because of their record and history, but when you actually look at the team on the ice, instead of a cherry '64 GTO they make the team out to be, the team more closely resembles the rusted out '87 Mustang that most of their trailer trash fans drive to work...err...the unemployment office in. Just because you throw on new wiper blades and floormats and get a $99 Earl Schieb paint job done doesn't make your team into a muscle car.
The Wings have 2/3rds of a scoring line. They have nobody else who has any business on a scoring line in the NHL. They have ZERO scoring depth and NOBODY you can realistically count on at the forward spots for offensive production come playoff time other than Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Holmstrom. They have AWFUL goaltending. AWFUL. Hasek has been run out of town and now the Wings are pinning their hopes on Chris Osgood, a guy who was already run from Detroit once because he couldn't withstand playoff pressure.
This, my friends, is a team ripe for the pickings.
We've already beaten a one-line team. Quite handily, actually. The Wild are a better team than the Wings are, and they play better team defense (which is really saying something - the Wild are the ONLY team that plays better team defense than the Wings do).
So let's go San Jose! I want the Wings!

Game? What game?
Don't have too much to say about that last one. Avs played reasonably well. Smyth was the balls again. Awesome to see them tie it up at the end of regulation. Heart sank when the OT goal was scored. Kind of disgusted.
But hey, we still have home ice. Hopefully we do something with it.
Rat Wangs are up 2-0 over the Preds. Come on, Preds. At least give these assholes a workout.

Round 1 - Game 1 - Avs 3, Wilds 2
Wow, what a game.
- Great goal by Sakic to win it, but I still don't like him. All time leading playoff overtime goal scorer notches another one.
- Credit goes to Salei for taking the smart shot. A lesser player would have shot it immediately and had it blocked well before it made it on net.
- Tonight is why the Avs signed Smyth and Hannan, and they came out with their nuts swinging. I apologize for all the criticism I laid upon these two (which admittedly wasn't much). Hannan was smart and physical, and Smyth was flying all over the place. Any concerns about his skating were answered tonight.
- Backstrom was the balls tonight. Gotta give it up to him, the Wilds wouldn't have been in that game if it weren't for him.
- Theodore was even more balls.
- There should have been no penalty shot. That was a goal. No worries. Made the game more exciting.
This team, this series, the whole thing feels like 03-04 all over again. It's as if FG decided to go out and rebuild that 03-04 team and give it another go and hopefully right the wrongs of that miserable 03-04 playoffs. Foreskin is back, Foote is back, Salei plays just like Blake, Theodore looks like Roy. Wolski is a Tanguay clone (both good and bad). Hell, they even rolled Kelly's ridiculous ass back in there to call the games (get well soon, Haynes).
I guess it wasn't until I heard the first "THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!" that it dawned on me that the reason this team feels so familiar is that it's the same team we had in 03-04. We all know that that wasn't how that season was supposed to end. Hopefully they live up to the potential they had in 03-04 and have right now.
THREE STARS:
1. Jose Theodore - 28 saves, .933sv%
2. Joe Sakic - 1g 1a, and dude scored the game winner
3. Ruslan Salei and Scott Hannan - It's my blog, I can have two 3rd stars if I want to.
